In simple words Search Engine Marketing means marketing your website through search engines.  Search engine marketing is method of internet marketing or online marketing.

Search Engine Marketing can be divided into two.

  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Advertisement on Search engines or Pay per Click advertisement (PPC)

Search Engine Optimization usually abbreviated as SEO is the process of optimizing a web page or web site to rank high and list in the top results (SERP) of organic or natural (unpaid) results of search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.

SEO doesn’t cost anything. But the competition in the field of SEO is very high. So to make a webpage appear on top of search results of a search engine can be extremely difficult. And you may need the help of an SEO expert to do the job if you are unfamiliar with SEO techniques. So even though SEO is free the SEO expert may charge you a reasonable amount as fee.

SEO is slower and time consuming but lasts longer if properly optimized.

Pay per Click advertisement (PPC)

Pay per Click (also called as Cost per Click) advertisements are Ads placed on third party websites and search engines to drive traffic to websites in which the advertiser pays the publisher (usually search engines or third party website owners) for each click on the ads.

Unlike SEO, PPC advertisement is not free. You need to pay for each click your ad gets. But you get instant result. Your ads appear on the top of search results. But once you stop the ad the listing disappears and you lose traffic. So in order to maintain the traffic you need to pay continuously for each click.

Usually advertisers can bid on the amount they are willing to pay for each click. The more you bid the higher your ad appear on search engines and your ad appear on the top.

There are many advertisement platforms like Google adwords, Bing ads etc.
