How to find the MAC Address of your device

Sponsored Ads

A MAC address also known as the media access control address is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC) for use as a network address in communications within a network segment.
This use is common in most IEEE 802 networking technologies, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

In order to connect your computer, game console, or smart TV to ISU’s network, the device must be registered by its unique MAC address in the ResNet Device Registration portal (wireless.ilinoisstate.edu).

MAC addresses follow the format, XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX, but will sometimes display as XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX or XXXXXXXXXXXX.

Nintendo Wii and Wii U

Nintendo game consoles do not come with built-in Ethernet adapters like the Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation consoles, so you must connect them to the wired ResNet network via a USB Ethernet adapter. You must then determine the MAC address of the USB Ethernet adapter in order to register your Nintendo Wii or Wii U.

You can choose between the official Nintendo Wii USB LAN adapter or one made by a third-party manufacturer. If you purchase an official Nintendo LAN adapter, may automatically connect to ResNet when you plug it in. We recommend trying to connect your official Nintendo LAN adapter on your own to see if you can get a working connection. Be sure to switch your connection type to Wired under the Connection Settings menu. If you are unable to get a working network connection, or if you are using a 3rd party Ethernet adapter, you must determine the MAC address of the USB LAN adapter so you can register it in the Device Registration portal.

  1. Select Wii button at the bottom of the main menu.
  2. Select Wii Settings
  3. Select Internet
  4. Select Console Information.
  5. Locate the Adapter (wired) MAC Address near the top of the screen.
Important: If you are using a 3rd party Ethernet Adapter, the MAC address may display as all zeros. If this occurs, follow the directions below in the section labeled “My MAC Address is 00:00:00:00:00:00”.

Nintendo Wii U

  1. From the Wii U Home menu, select System Settings
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Select View MAC Address.
Your MAC Address will now display on the screen.
Important: If you are using a 3rd party Ethernet Adapter, the MAC address may display as all zeros. If this occurs, follow the directions below in the section labeled “My MAC Address is 00:00:00:00:00:00”.

My USB LAN Adapter MAC Address is 00:00:00:00:00

If the MAC address for your USB LAN adapter is displayed as 00:00:00:00:00, you will need to take additional steps to determine the MAC address. A MAC address of all zeros is invalid and cannot be used on the wired ResNet network. This problem is most commonly associated with third-party USB LAN adapters. Two alternative methods for obtaining the MAC address for a USB LAN adapter are described below:

Finding the USB LAN Adapter MAC Address Using Windows

To find the MAC address of your USB LAN adapter using Windows, do the following:

  1. Plug your USB LAN adapter into a USB port on your Windows PC.
  2. Wait for any drivers to install (they should be called Generic USB Ethernet Adapter).
  3. After installation, press the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. In the Run window, type CMD.
  4. In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
  5. Scroll up until you find USB Ethernet Adapter.
  6. Write down the alphanumeric Physical Address that follows this format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.

Alternative Method

Connect your Nintendo Wii, or Wii U, and USB LAN adapter to a non-ResNet Ethernet port. You will also need to connect the Wii to a TV. By plugging the Nintendo Wii and USB LAN adapter into an Ethernet port that does not use ResNet, you can then go into Wii settings to determine the actual MAC address (as described in the section “Find Your MAC Address for Nintendo Wii and Wii U” above). You may be able to request a Residential Computer Consultant (RCC) to assist with this.
